School of Dental Hygiene

                           Special Admissions Requirements/Prerequisites

                                                       Applying to ECC

The clinical dental hygiene course sequence begins in the Fall semester.  Admission is competitive and is limited to 60 students.  Completed applications and supporting transcripts must be received in the North Campus Admissions Office.  Acceptances are contingent on satisfactory College Placement Test results and successful completion of current academic courses.  Completed applications should be received by March 31st for Fall admission.  Applicants should include a cover letter describing any courses in progress or expected to be completed prior to entering the dental hygiene program.

The Admissions Office has responsibility for selecting qualified applicants who have the potential for successfully completing the dental hygiene program.  To be considered for admission to clinical dental hygiene courses, applicants must demonstrate evidence of the following:

Ø    Current high school graduates – courses in general biology and chemistry at 88% or higher and a cumulative high school average of at least 88%.  Reading and writing competencies at the EN110 level and mathematics competency at the MT007 level as determined by the College Placement Tests.

Ø      Current college students – internal and external college transfer applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and grades of “C” or higher in courses required in the dental hygiene curriculum.  Reading and writing competencies must be at the EN110 level and mathematics competencies at the MT007 level. Preference is given to applicants who have completed BI150, BI151, BI230, BI231 and EN110. Applicants who have not had a chemistry course must take CH010 and CH011 (formerly CH100 and CH101) or CH140 and CH141 (formerly CH200 and CH201), general Chemistry with Lab.  Applicants who have not had a biology course must take BI107 or BI149 before BI150/151.  Science courses taken more than ten years ago may not be accepted.

Most dental hygiene students elect to complete required general education courses in the curriculum prior to entering clinical dental hygiene courses.  This approach is helpful to students who have other personal responsibilities.

Applicants who do not meet admission requirements may be accepted to an extended curriculum option.  This is an individually developed schedule of courses based on the applicant’s academic background and College Placement Test results.  This path provides an opportunity to meet program admission requirements for clinical courses.  Students may begin this option in Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.  General Education courses are available at all Erie Community College campuses and other colleges.  Some courses are available in distance learning format as well.

The Dental Hygiene Program is located on the 120 acre North Campus in Williamsville.  This charming village is located just east of Buffalo and is close to a variety of shopping and cultural activities, four seasons of recreational opportunities, professional sports venues, a myriad of dining experiences, Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, the Health Sciences Complex of the State University of New York at Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Toronto.  Classes, laboratories and clinics are small and have excellent faculty-student ratios.  The Faculty of Dental Hygiene are highly qualified, dedicated professors with diverse academic and clinical backgrounds.  Their primary focus is teaching with emphasis on the individual student’s professional growth.  Each student is assigned to a Dental Hygiene Faculty member for academic and clinical advisement and a variety of student support services are available within the college.

A newly constructed Dental Hygiene facility features classrooms, laboratories and a teaching clinic designed to enhance student learning.  Modern dental equipment, networked computers and multimedia capability support the teaching environment.  Clinical training prepares graduates for the current job market as well as film-based radiography; electronic patient records and scheduling; local anesthesia and nitrous oxide administration. The Learning Resource Center contains a growing collection of books, journals and electronic media to enrich the learning needs of students and is networked to an extensive selection of libraries and research databases.

Application forms may be received by contacting Ms. Joanne Dunnigan, the Secretary of the Faculty of Dental Hygiene, at 716-851-1384 or clicking on the link below.
